The Portafold Folding Caravan
The Portafold was Britain's first purpose-designed folding caravan. Conceived in 1960 by Henleycraft's founders, constructed entirely from GRP, and sold under a Henleycraft patent, it was a pioneering product in both design and materials. Marketed as a 4-5 berth caravan that could be erected in one minute by one person and towed by any car from 800cc upwards, it had no wood to rot and no body to rust. Many Portafolds survive in excellent condition to this day.
Henleycraft designed the original Portafold, held the patent, and manufactured the prototype and the first batches of production. The caravan was exhibited at the Ideal Home Exhibition and the Camping and Outdoor Life Exhibition at Olympia in 1961, and later licensed for continued production through to 1980. Jon Pertwee featured in advertising for the Portafold during its production years.
